No more free advice from the HSE (Health and Safety Executive)?
The HSE closed its Infoline service on 30 September 2011. That means you cannot call them for free H&S advice. You can off course download their free PDF guides on a variety of H&S topics - long documents that only us health and safety people seem to love!
What does the closure mean?
Put simply, unless you use either e-mail or the Internet, it's going to be very difficult to contact the HSE. So if you want to contact the HSE, your only real option is to do so via its website.
Do you need to speak to anyone?
If you're looking for advice on managing health and safety issues, the HSE has stated that businesses should contact a Consultant.
What if you need further advice?
From now on, HSE inspectors or staff will not be in a position to offer advice - at least not by phone. The HSE has a pretty clear line on this: speak to a consultant that's on the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR) instead.
Of course many business owners were wary of asking HSE inspectors for advice, but now if you do so whilst they visit your premises – BEWARE!
Apart from the fact that asking too many questions may prompt an inspector to look at your arrangements very closely, from April 2012 inspectors' time will become chargeable at £124 per hour, for material breaches.
